In addition to the name, the thing that really attracted us to Mongrel Creek's wines was their motto -"No Pretence, no bullshit" - a refreshing theme! The name essentailly comes from a creek that has played havoc with the vineyard. For 3 years running the only access to their home was washed away by the ravaging winter waters.A lone blackboy growing in the middle of the creek is all that was left standing. It still stands, the waters still ravage, but they believe that they have finally defeated the Mongrel Creek.
Larry Schoppe and his wife Shirley have been making wine on this very small vineyard since 1996, and have seen a lot of recent success with a number of awards in various WA wine shows. Their mission is to "produce quality wine at an affordable price" and we think they have achieved this with their Semillon Sauvignon Blanc and straight Sauvignon Blanc in particular. The SBS was a highlight in a recent tasting - it's great to have a wine from the Margaret River that is truly free from the "pretence" and the "bullshit", and a price that reflects this!
