Mudgee, New South Wales
De Beaurepaire Wines are a new vineyard added to the Brighton Fine Wines listing, and essentially represent yet another great "value for money" selection available to our customers. Located in the heart of the Mudgee at Rylstone (a sub-region in Central West NSW with a real cool climate & limestone soils), the very passionate and proud Richard Beaurepaire has sourced the talents of outstanding winemakers such as David Lowe, Jane Wilson, Frank Newman, and Michael Slater to produce a wine that they desribe as a unique pitch between French and Australian wine styles.
The grape varieties are split as follows:
- Shiraz (Syrah): 11.8 hectares

- Merlot: 9.8 hectares
- Cabernet-Sauvignon: 7.7 hectares
- Petit Verdot: 2.8 hectares
- Semillon: 6.3 hectares
- Chardonnay: 7.3 hectares
- Viognier: 3.9 hectares
- Verdehlo: 2.0 hectares
- Pinot Gris: 1.0 hectares
The Captain Starlight range (named after the famous bushranger character Captain Starlight/Harry Readford) include a very popular SBS, a rich Cab Sav with more than five years bottle age, and a unique Merlot-Cab Sav-Petit Verdot blend that is not dissimilar to the Boudeaux style which we have been excited by over the last year. At less than $20 a bottle, this range represents a great alternative for wine drinkers with both quality and price in mind.
Having said that, our picks from De Beaurepaire are, without doubt, their Reserve wines, which include the Elyanne Semillon, the Victor Cabernet Sauvignon, and the Leopold Shiraz Viognier. Each of them have truly redefined our perception of wine from the Mudgee region. They show a classic French style, are well balanced, and are drinking well now, yet could also reward cellaring. The 2006 Victor Cabernet Sauvignon was our favourite tasted.
